De-Sexing

There are many good reasons to have your cat de-sexed:

• De-sexed cats are generally less aggressive, wander less and are less likely to spray. This results in reduced incidences of injuries and disease from cat fights and fewer injuries from cars. Their owners also save money on vet bills.
• De-sexed cats tend to live longer.
• De-sexed cats enjoy significant health benefits with prostate, ovarian and uterine cancers ruled out.
• De-sexed male cats are less likely to spray and mark their territory.
• The de-sexing process is likely to have a calming and stabilising effect on behaviour in both males and females.
• Last but not least, when animals are de-sexed, the suffering which so often ends in the euthanasia of thousands of unwanted cats is alleviated.

It is a common misconception that female cats need to have one litter before they are de-sexed in order to stabilise their personalities. This is simply not true.

De-sexing can now safely be carried out by vets from about twelve weeks of age. Early age de-sexing is advised, as kittens can reproduce from about 16 weeks of age.
