History

The Hobart Cat Centre was established in 1974 by Florence Robson, who had a vision to provide a shelter for all unwanted cats and kittens of Hobart. Miss Robson was a great advocate of responsible pet ownership and devised and implemented an education program for schools emphasising the importance and long term benefits of de-sexing and general cat care.

30 years on, the Centre's functions have grown to include boarding, adoption and trapping.

In 1996 our first op-shop opened in the Blackmans Bay Shopping Centre due to the hard work of our much loved then-President Mona Foster and Treasurer Alan Cunningham. The Blackmans Bay op-shop has since re-located to 1717 Channel Highway, Margate.

In 2002 The Black Cat Op Shop began operation at 441 Main Road, Glenorchy. Both shops have proven to be successful and a vital form of fundraising for the Centre. The shops sell everything from clothing to books, furniture and bric-a-brac.

Since its inception, the Cat Centre has had well over 100,000 cats and kittens pass through its doors.
